6 Moms On The Value They’re Most Excited To Teach Their Daughter This Year

By Amy Jamieson

Math, science, reading, writing — these are the subjects that come to mind when we look ahead to helping our daughters learn this year. But what about subjects like patience, flexibility, resiliency, and strength? They may not be listed on the official school curriculum, but there's no doubt that each of them will be critical homework in 2020.

In celebration of October's International Day of the Girl, a day created to empower girls and draw attention to the challenges they face all over the world, Romper teamed up with Athleta Girl to ask moms about the values they're striving to teach their girls this year. Whether it’s reinforcing the beauty of diversity, or staying strong when times get tough, these messages from moms are the stuff true girl power is made of.

For each inspiring lesson these moms shared with Romper, we paired an equally fierce Athleta Girl outfit, so that all girls have the chance to kick off the new school year looking stylish and feeling strong.

Tracy

Mom to Abby (10) and Ashley (12)

“I'm teaching my two girls to do whatever it takes to maintain their girl connections and friendships. I want them to know just how important it is to stay connected to others and to have a support system — now and always.”

Alison

Mom to Sadie (16)

“The key pieces of advice that I’m trying to impart on my daughter are flexibility and grace. We have to be flexible and creative in how we deal with all the things thrown at us lately; learning to roll with these changes has been key. When it comes to grace, she's learning not only to have grace with others, but also have some grace for herself — accepting that good days and bad days are both part of life.”

Jess

Mom to Alexandra (10)

“Lately, we've been focusing on being kind and counting our blessings. We've also been trying to encourage our 10-year-old to see the good in the world and in people — it's always there, you just have to look for it.”

Leanne

Mom to Emma (7) and Maegan (4)

“I’m trying to teach my daughters to accept change, and also to find the good in change. My word of the year is resiliency. Instead of worrying what 2020 will do to my kids and their generation, I am focusing on what 2020 will do for them! Rather than thinking they’ll be traumatized, I am choosing to believe they will learn to be resilient.”

Amy

Mom to Jillian (10)

“I keep reminding my daughter that no matter what happens, I will be there for her. I'm encouraging her to choose people who lift her up and to always be proud of who she is.”

Michelle

Mom to Gemma (6)

“I’m very much reinforcing to my daughter the beauty and strength of diversity and encouraging her to always include everyone and to be curious about — and appreciative of — people's differences.”
