I Tried This New FDA-Cleared Medical Exam Kit & Here’s What All Parents Should Know

Connecting and sharing vital health data with a medical professional from the comfort of your own home just got easier.

by Kate Brierley

As a mom, I can attest to the fact that anything that makes parenthood easier and more convenient is always welcome — now more than ever before. Even though we’ve been hunkering down at home lately, there are certain things that just can’t be done within these four walls. Or, they couldn’t before now.

One of those things is doctor visits, which weren’t my favorite even before 2020. I don’t know about your kid's pediatrician’s office, but ours has a designated “sick child” area that’s only separated from the “healthy child” area by a low wall that they can see over. I have choice words for whoever designed it that way, but it doesn’t mean that we haven’t sat on either side of that wall more than a few times.

In today’s world, this is even more concerning than it used to be. A runny nose is one thing, but these days, there are new, far more serious things you can pick up just about anywhere you go. It goes without saying that I’m keen on avoiding this situation however I can — for me, and for my two young sons. So when I heard about TytoCare — a quick and easy at-home medical exam kit, I felt like I received a gift from above. A device that allows you to capture vital health data including heart rate and temperature, not to mention perform an ear exam to share with a doctor, all without leaving home? That’s the ultimate in convenience and peace of mind. I had to try it out for myself to see if it was too good to be true.

Spoiler alert: It wasn’t. It really is that good. And it’s already saved my family two masked-up, bundled-up, time-consuming trips to the doctor’s office. Read on for everything you need to know about this new kind of care.

It’s A One-Stop Shop.

You’d think you need a suitcase full of equipment to check out your kid's lungs, heart, throat, ears, and beyond. But the TytoCare device (with built-in camera and a thermometer) is handheld and can do all of the above. Amazing, right? Plus, everything from an otoscope adaptor for examining ears to a stethoscope adaptor for listening to heart and lungs comes in a case that’s only a little bigger than the one that holds your sunglasses. All of these pieces pop onto the device itself and sync with the TytoCare app to guide you through whatever type of exam you need. Mind blown.

It’s Safe & Couldn’t Be Easier To Use.

I’ve got to admit that I was a little (or a lot) nervous about examining my son’s ears, knowing that there’s a lot of sensitive stuff in there and having never used an otoscope in my life. Could I do this? Yes, with the help of a tutorial and simple, clear directions and prompts from the device and app to help me out. It showed me what I was looking for, how far to enter the ear, and the best positioning for a comfortable, simple, and accurate experience. And the handheld device itself let me see what I was doing in real-time via its camera, so I knew I was in control. Phew!

It Helps Diagnose And Treat Some Of The Most Common Illnesses.

This baby is ready to tackle colds, ear infections, sore throats, fevers, and more. I even found out the permanent, irritating red spot on my arm is eczema, and I learned how to take care of it. How, you ask? TytoCare is built to send the images or videos captured with your at-home exam directly to a doctor who can offer professional advice, and even a prescription if needed.

You Don’t Have To Leave Home.

This, to me, is one of the best parts. Nobody really likes a doctor’s visit, especially when they’re feeling sick. With the stress of coordinating an appointment eliminated, I knew this at-home option was just what my family needed. My son was relaxed and comfortable with me examining his ears, whereas at the doctor he’s tense and anxious. He even thought it was cool to see what the camera was seeing and know what was going on. This is a kid who has had three rounds of ear tubes and countless ear infections in his five years, so sitting on the couch in our living room during his exam brought a sense of calm that I’ve never seen him have at his pediatrician's office.

The takeaway? Try it. You won't be disappointed, and take it from me: You deserve anything that makes your life easier, these days and every day.
