Rachel Zoe And Her Boys Are Using Their Garden As A Hands-On Lesson In Sustainability

From growing their own produce to mindful consumption

As adults, we may feel like we’re the role models, but the truth is, we can learn a lot from our kids, too. They may be small, but children have big ideas and the potential to inspire us all. This spring, we’ve partnered with H&M to celebrate a few role models who are already changing the world.

Rachel Zoe has always had love and admiration for Mother Nature and has found it to be a source of endless inspiration. She’s happy she’s been able to instill that same love and respect for the earth in her two sons, Skyler Morrison, 10, and Kaius Jagger, 7. “Whether they are in the mountains or running on the beach, they love being outside,” says Zoe, adding that their interest in the great outdoors has also made it easier for them to learn about environmentalism and sustainability. It does make sense: If our little ones know how to appreciate the earth from the get-go, they’ll be more proactive about preserving it. “The boys truly love it and are old enough to understand that we all have to help to keep our planet healthy,” she says.

Something as simple as gardening is a great way to teach kids about sustainability. “When we decided to plant the garden in the greenhouse, they were both so excited to take an active role in learning how to grow and nurture plants,” says Zoe. She also says it’s rewarding to see how her sons react when they incorporate their crops into a family meal. “I love knowing that I grew these plants and they are a food source for us,” says Skyler. “I love the look of everything blooming and growing.” His favorite part of gardening is harvesting (and eating the food, of course). Adds his brother, Kaius, “Skyler really loves the broccoli that we grow.”

“If adults listen to kids more I think we could come up with better ideas together to help our planet and each other.”

In addition to gardening, Zoe has taught her kids the importance of recycling and eliminating single-use plastics, and preserving energy by making sure the faucets and light switches are turned off. “As a family, we still have work to do to build more sustainable habits in our home, but I think it’s important to just start with one step.” These small but significant habits can have a major impact.

When it comes to encouraging your child to make a change, Zoe says, “As parents, if we take the time to really listen and observe what inspires our children, they will ultimately show you what they are passionate about.” Adds Skyler, “If adults listen to kids more I think we could come up with better ideas together to help our planet and each other.” Zoe also says it’s important for us to champion children and their goals. “We need to teach them to nurture their own ideas, and we can only do that if we give them the support and validation they need,” she says.
