There are countless Christmas movies to choose from every year, but one in particular seems to encompass the 2017 mood: How the Grinch Stole Christmas. With all the political and social strife that's happened this year, I can't help but sympathize with the Grinch a little more than usual. Thankfully, there are not one but two versions of the Grinch I can enjoy this month: the animated TV special from 1966 and the Jim Carrey version released in 2000. So here's how to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas — either version — in order to get into somewhat of a Christmas-y mood this month.
As one can imagine, it's bit more difficult to track down the older version of the movie. Unfortunately it is neither on Netflix nor Hulu, and won't be coming to either platform at any point in December. One can purchase a streaming version from Amazon for around $8, or watch the short film on Daily Motion. (There is also one on YouTube — the quality leaves something to be desired, but it gets the job done.) While the 1966 Grinch is a classic (and obviously inspiration for the Carrey version), most of the showings of the Grinch are for the 2000 installment. But honestly, I'm totally fine with that. After all, can it get much better than Carrey's Grinch humor? I think not. So without further adieu, here's how to watch the live-action classic this year:
Stream It On Netflix
The Netflix gods have blessed Grinch fans. Those with a Netflix subscription can easily stream the film on the platform whenever they want. Unfortunately, it is not on Hulu; if viewers are as pop culture obsessed as I am, though, they may subscribe to both for occasions just like this.
Freeform's 25 Days Of Christmas
Those with cable can catch How the Grinch Stole Christmas throughout the month of December on Freeform. According to the Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas schedule, there are several chances to see it on the network since it will be airing on Dec. 16, Dec. 17, Dec. 23, and finally on Christmas Eve. It's a great opportunity to participate in two Christmas traditions: Freeform's beloved movie marathon, and watching the Grinch so many times that by Christmas Day you've memorized all his wonderful Whovian insults.
Buy The Film To Stream
Sure, the Grinch is on Netflix now, but as subscribers know: all good things must come to an end. It's unknown when/if the Grinch will ever leave the platform, but just in case, there are other services that stream it with a purchase. How the Grinch Stole Christmas is available from YouTube, iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, and Vudu. Prices start at around $10.
Buy The DVD
Does anyone buy DVDs anymore? I'm not sure, but in the case of the Grinch, it may be worth it. How the Grinch Stole Christmas is available on DVD from Amazon for around $13, which isn't all that pricier for the purchasable streaming versions. For those who prefer to be a little bit old school in their movie watching, buying the DVD and insuring your Grinch viewing for years to come is a good call.
Watching Clips On YouTube
When all else fails, YouTube is there to save Christmas. If one just wants to watch their favorite parts of the Grinch (or rewatch, after viewing the film in its entirety on Netflix or Freeform), it's likely they're available with just a simple search for the Grinch on YouTube.
With all these options to watch the Grinch, there's no excuse not to see it every year and remember why it's a holiday classic. I'm definitely going to take some time and watch it (probably more than once) in between being a Grinch myself and looking forward to 2017 coming to an end.
