10 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About Yellowstone

Like, did you know the Dutton ranch is an actual, working ranch in Montana?

Yellowstone on Paramount+ has become an entire universe unto itself. Now in its fifth season and with spinoffs galore, the series rules television right now. Here are some fun little facts to get you even closer to the Duttons.

#1. The Dutton ranch is a working ranch.

Nestled on 30 acres near Darby, Montana, the Chief Joseph Ranch is a real working cattle ranch. When it’s not starring as the home of the Duttons on Yellowstone.

#2. The director supplies the horses.

Taylor Sheridan is a bonafide ranch owner who supplies most of the horses for Yellowstone from his horse breeding operation in Texas. Which probably makes it easier to direct them.

#3. “Gator” really is a chef.

When he’s not feeding the Dutton family, “Gator” is actually a chef in real life. Gabriel Guilbeau is in charge of feeding the entire crew as head of craft services. Talk about a multitasker.

#4. Cowboys aplenty are on set.

Many of the actors and extras on set are real cowboys like bunkhouse residents Jake Ream, Ryan Bingham, and Ethan Lee, all of whom have real-life wrangling experience.

#5. There’s a “Cowboy Camp” for actors.

Yellowstone actors are expected to take part in “cowboy camp” hosted by Taylor Sheridan before filming, where they learn to ride horses, rope, and wrangle like the real deal.

#6. Cole Hauser was cast as Rip without an audition.

Even though Cole Hauser’s team initially wanted him to audition for a Dutton son, he and Taylor Sheridan knew he was meant to play Rip. He didn’t even have to audition.

#7. Kevin Costner’s band wrote songs for the series.

In 2020, Kevin Costner’s band, Kevin Costner & Modern West, put out an album called Tales from Yellowstone and some of the songs have been included in the series.

#8. You can stay at the Dutton ranch.

Fancy staying in a log cabin like Rip and Beth’s for a few nights? You can rent cabins on the real Dutton ranch for getaways by booking on the Chief Joseph Ranch website.

#9. The horses have the best names.

Like Metallic Cat, Dun It Chexinic, Walla Walla Starbuck, Lil Joe Cash, High-Class Trash, Smartly Starstruck, Metallic Memorey, Not My Day Job, and Spookernickerin to name a few.

#10. They already know how the series will end.

Taylor Sheridan hasn’t said when the series will end, but he knows how it will happen. “I know exactly how it ends and it's working towards that ending,” he told Cowboys & Indians.
