5 Rugrats-Themed Activities To Spark Your Kids’ Imagination This Summer

Let Tommy Pickles and the gang inspire imaginative play this summer

by Hannah Chambers

When it comes to turning an ordinary afternoon at home into an extraordinary day full of memories, nobody does it quite like the kiddos from Rugrats.

If you watched the hilarious cartoon babies get up to all kinds of shenanigans in Nickelodeon’s original series, which ran from 1991 to 2004, you’ll remember that there was no shortage of adventure for Tommy Pickles and the gang. Perhaps the most impressive part was that the diaper-clad crew rarely had to leave the backyard to take the fun to the next level, with their limitless imaginations and penchant for turning random household objects into coveted toys and tools. Luckily, these adventures are no longer just another piece of ‘90s nostalgia; the babies are back (with a shiny new CG-animation look) in the Rugrats revival, NOW STREAMING on Paramount+.

To celebrate the return of Tommy, Chuckie, Susie, Angelica, Phil and Lil, give your little ones the opportunity to tap into their own imaginations with these incredibly simple (but endlessly fun!) Rugrats-inspired activities. And if you’re in Brooklyn, join the Rugrats characters and Paramount+ at Camp Romper on June 27 for some IRL fun — stop by the Baby Bottle Lemonade stand and the Rugrats Mural Wall to get messy with some washable paints!

Create Your Own Scavenger Hunt

With clever rhyming riddles and sneaky hiding spots, nothing will motivate your children to see the home with a fresh set of eyes quite like a competitive scavenger hunt. Up the ante with a time limit, or enlist the help of some nearby neighbors to switch things up.

Feast on a Delicious Backyard Picnic

If lunch is starting to feel a little lackluster, pack it up and take it outside! Plenty of iconic Rugrats scenes have taken place outside with a picnic blanket as a backdrop, and the same can be said for your kids’ summer memories. Spice up a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich by changing its shape with a cookie cutter, or pull out those leftover “just for special occasions” napkins from the last time you held a party at home.

Stage an Impromptu Water Fight

It wouldn’t be a true Rugrats reboot without Tommy’s famously leaky baby bottle that usually ends up doubling as a squirt gun. Take a page out of the Pickles family playbook and refashion some water bottles (or grab a squeeze bottle with a push cap) to cool down with a friendly water war.

Host an Epic Talent Show

From busting out dance routines to singing catchy tunes, the Rugrats rarely shy away from sharing their talents with anyone who will watch. Shine the spotlight on your own small fries with a planned-out talent show.

Have a Twin Playdate

Phil and Lil DeVille are the definition of inseparable; you’ll rarely ever see one without the other. Invite a bestie over for a twin-themed playdate, complete with matching outfits and games like Follow the Leader or Simon Says.
