You Need To Try This Mom’s Adorable Snack Time Upgrade

by BDG Studios

There’s no denying that snack time is an essential part of every family’s day, and mom of two and DIY creator Ashley Rose couldn’t agree more. “Playtime is pretty much all the time around our house, so sitting down for a snack is a nice way for us to regroup and chat together throughout the day,” Rose tells Romper. But it wouldn’t be snack time with littles if they didn’t occasionally insist on a new, inventive way to enjoy their favorite treats. Luckily, Rose has navigated this challenge before, and she filled Romper in on the cutest way to bring excitement back to snack time: customizable single-serving snack bowls that you can make at home.

These bowls, which are made using resin molds, become even more appealing when your kids realize they can be customized to match their favorite snack — which, for Rose’s family, means drawing inspiration from SIMPLY CHEETOS® Puffs White Cheddar. “My family lives and dies by these puffs” — which are made without any artificial colors or flavors — “and the only thing they love more than snack time is getting to craft,” she says. So naturally, Romper couldn’t resist tapping Rose to get the scoop on how you can create these adorable bowls with your own family.

Before heading out to the craft store, Rose recommends first taking stock of supplies you may already have that could lend itself to easy decorating solutions. “You could use confetti, glitter, sprinkles, or even little heirloom charms for an extra memorable keepsake,” says Rose. Let your family pick what kind of designs or special moments they’d like to include in their bowl, then you can craft them together, turning simple snack time into an exciting activity.

OK, ready to get shopping? Aside from your favorite SIMPLY by Frito-Lay snacks to fill your DIY creations with after they’ve set, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Food-safe epoxy resin
  • Resin coloring
  • Unrefined edge bowl molds
  • Clear mixing cups
  • A drop cloth (to keep your table area clean)
  • Decorations (Rose used craft wood flakes, gold sprinkles, resin pigment, and an ink sinker)

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, keep scrolling to learn how to upgrade your family’s snack time with these sweet, simple snack bowls.

Step 1

Mix the two-part resin combination in a plastic mixing bowl or cup. If you’re adding sprinkles, wood flakes, or resin pigment like Rose did, you can do so one at a time in the mixing bowl before pouring into the resin mold.

Step 2

Pour the resin mixture into the mold and let it dry for four to five hours. If you really want to get creative with your customizations, you can place your decorations in the freshly poured resin after it’s been added to the mold as well.

Step 3

Once the resin is fully cured, gently remove the bowl from the mold little by little.

Step 4

Since resin is food-safe, you can enjoy your favorite snacks and custom bowls right away! Rose loves using one of hers to enjoy a serving of SIMPLY TOSTITOS® Organic Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, and a second to hold a dip to go with it. Just be sure to take extra care of your new creations by hand-washing your resin bowls instead of putting them in the dishwasher.
