15 Celebrities Who Are Proud Weed Smokers & Not Afraid To Talk About It

I don't smoke weed or stash edibles in my purse, but I am also an advocate for the phrase "never say never" when it comes to this topic. After all, it's hard to ignore Mary Jane users when they tout its many benefits, like relief of pain from chronic diseases or the alleviation of nausea and vomiting related to cancer chemotherapy. For me, benefits like that mean it's necessary to push aside notions that marijuana is reserved for stoners and make room to consider its benefits. And there are several celebrities who are proud weed smokers, many of them even working as advocates for the legalization of medical marijuana.

Whether you fall into the category of Sublime's “I smoke two joints in the morning, I smoke two joints at night" or occasionally partake to help ease symptoms of anxiety, chances are there's a celeb toker who fits your style. As a proud cannabis user, you might fall into the Rihanna and Morgan Freeman crowd, or perhaps you've even lit up with your parents, like Sarah Silverman. On the other hand, Natalie Portman's that-was-fun-in-my-youth MO might be more your speed.

Either way, your philosophy is yours and there's no judging here. Plus, if you're like me, you're keeping your options open anyway. Like I said, never say never, my friend.

1. Rihanna

RiRi makes her love for weed pretty apparent in her song "James Joint" when she says, "I'd rather be smoking weed." She even made headlines in 2012 after rolling up a blunt on her security guard's bald head at Coachella, according to Popcrush.

2. Miley Cyrus

Ain't no shame in the "Wrecking Ball" singer's weed smoking game. Cyrus has admitted on multiple occasions that she likes to light up, even smoking a joint on stage at the 2013 MTV EMAs in Amsterdam. But in a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Cyrus said she decided to quit her marijuana habit, citing a want to "make sure that I was super clear in the way I’m talking.”

4. Justin Timberlake

In 2011, the "Sexy Back" singer said "absolutely" when asked by Playboy if he was a pot smoker. The interviewer then said, "Is it a creativity booster? I read you were stoned for much of the time you made Justified." Timberlake responded: "The only thing pot does for me is it gets me to stop thinking. Sometimes I have a brain that needs to be turned off. Some people are just better high."

5. Lady Gaga

The "Born This Way" beauty has been known to partake, even smoking weed in several clips of a teaser for her "Five Foot Two" documentary on Netflix in order to cope with chronic pain related to fibromyalgia. In a 2013 interview with Elvis Duran and The Z100 Morning Show, Gaga said, “I have been addicted to it and it’s ultimately related to anxiety coping and it’s a form of self-medication and I was smoking up to 15 to 20 marijuana cigarettes a day with no tobacco." But the singer added that she plans to "fight" addiction and "challenge herself to create music without the aid of mood-altering substances," according to People.

6. Morgan Freeman

The Oscar-winning actor with the legendary voice credits cannabis with reducing his fibromyalgia pain, even saying in an interview with True Activist, "How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it!" Freeman also takes a firm stance on the legalization of herb, telling the Daily Beast in 2015: "Legalize it across the board!’”

11. Kirsten Dunst

In 2007, Dunst spoke to MTV and said, "I do like weed. I have a different outlook on marijuana than America does. My best friend Sasha’s dad was Carl Sagan, the astronomer. He was the biggest pot smoker in the world and he was a genius."

She added: "I’ve never been a major smoker, but I think America’s view on weed is ridiculous. I mean — are you kidding me? If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place. I’m not talking about being stoned all day, though. I think if it’s not used properly, it can hamper your creativity and close you up inside."

15. Michael Phelps

"Proud" might be an overstatement. In 2009, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history apologized after a photo of hitting a bong was leaked to the media. Phelps said, "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me." Since then, Phelps added 12 medals to his Olympic total, taking his final count to 28 before he retired in 2016. Sounds like he's doing alright.
