9 Brilliant Makeup And Life Hacks For Glasses-Wearers

by Lauren Schumacker

For too many people who wear glasses, makeup looks take a backseat. They think that since they're wearing glasses, anything they put on their face will either be obscured and not show up well, or will clash with the color, shape, or look of the frames. But just because you're wearing glasses doesn't mean you can't have fun with a pretty makeup look as well, and there are some pretty brilliant makeup and life hacks if you wear glasses about which you absolutely need to know.

Choosing which products to use and in which shades, and then actively applying those products doesn't always come second-nature even if you're not wearing glasses. If you are wearing glasses, however, you also have to take into account the shape, size, and color of the frames when planning out your look, as well as the fact that you might not be able to see all that well when you're putting your makeup on. Luckily, fellow glasses-wearers have stumbled upon — or brilliantly created — some super-smart hacks to make wearing makeup with glasses easier. Not only that, but there are also some handy life hacks that glasses wearers will find useful when it comes to successfully navigating life with glasses, whether you're a new glasses-wearer or old. Everyone could use a few helpful tricks to make life easier — with makeup or without.

1

Use Primer To Keep Your Glasses In Place

It's more than a little bit irritating when your glasses slip and slide all over the place whenever you look up, down, or around. According to a Reddit thread, if you dab a small amount of eyeshadow primer on your nose where your glasses rest, they'll stay put and won't slide around. In an article for Allure, Renee Jacques wrote that the hack makes sense because eyeshadow primer is meant to hold shadow in place, so it provides a "slightly tacky" surface that'll make sure your glasses stay put. Brilliant.

2

Wear A Shadow Lighter Than Your Frames

While you'll likely need to experiment a bit to see what works best with your specific frames, if you're unsure and want something that's guaranteed to at least look suitable, stick with something lighter. Makeup expert — and glasses-wearer — Bobbi Brown told Byrdie that if you wear colorful frames, your eyeshadow should be "lighter and brighter than your frames" so that your eyes will pop. With neutral frames, you have more opportunities to experiment.

3

Make Your Eyeliner Match Your Frames

If you aren't quite sure how to wear eyeliner with your glasses, you're probably not alone. According to The Gloss, however, there's an easy rule of thumb: if your frames are thick, opt for thick eyeliner, while if your frames are thin, your eyeliner should be as well. Easy.

4

Use Travel Brushes

If you're nearsighted, you might want to invest in a set of travel brushes. According to the previously mentioned Reddit thread, the shorter travel brushes will let you get closer to the mirror so you can see better when applying makeup. This hack would especially come in handy for eye makeup, for which more precision is needed.

5

Always Opt For Volumizing Mascara

In an interview with Teen Vogue, makeup artist Agostina Lombardo said that you should curl your lashes and then apply a black volumizing mascara rather than trying to do a lot of lengthening. Lengthening mascaras will cause your lashes to brush against your lenses, which can smear makeup on them and will definitely get old fast.

6

Color-Corrector Is Your Friend

Some frames can exaggerate the circles under your eye, which is definitely not the look you're going for. According to the aforementioned article from Byrdie, this is especially true in long-sighted frames, which means you might need to add a color-corrector to your makeup arsenal to effectively counteract the effect. Top with a layer of concealer and you're good to go.

7

Clean Your Lenses With Diluted Dish Soap

Some cleansers are going to be too harsh for your lenses and can even be too harsh for your frames. The best thing to use to wash your glasses is dish soap, as Mashable reported. Dilute it with a little bit of warm water for a gentler way to get those glasses squeaky-clean.

8

Glow-In-The-Dark Paint Or Tape Will Light Up Your Glasses Case

It can be easy to lose the case for your glasses in the dark. If you add a bit of glow-in-the-dark paint or a strip of luminescent tape, you'll be able to track it down no matter how dark it is, as the previously-mentioned article from Mashable noted. Plus, it's a solution that won't break the bank.

9

A Tooth Pick Will Fix A Loose Or Missing Screw

If the screw falls out of your frames, it can feel like a crisis, especially if you don't have any other way to see. As long as you have a toothpick, however, you'll be OK. According to a video produced by BuzzFeed, to replace a missing screw in your glasses, insert a toothpick where the screw was and then gently break it off. No one will be able to tell there's a piece of a toothpick holding your glasses together. Sneaky and smart.
