9 Things Long Term Couples Do Every Day — The Good, Bad, & Weird

by Olivia Youngs

If I've said it once I've said it a billion times — relationships are hard work. When you've been with the same person for a long time, you inevitably get to the point where you know each other in just about every way possible. The good— and the not so good. There are certain things every long term couple does everyday that build their relationship up and make them the definition of #relationshipgoals. And the best part is that a lot of these happen as a natural part of progression. (I mean, after all this time, is there really a reason for shutting the bathroom door anymore?)

My husband and I have been together for almost four years, and in that time we've seen the best and worst of each other. We have weird little quirks that bring us closer, and habits that we practice everyday without fail.

Whether you've been with your SO for 15 years or five, these habits are inescapable and healthy. Before you get worried that you're getting "too comfortable," remember that these habits are just the sign of a relationship that's working. Some of them are funny, some are serious, and others are just plain weird. Nonetheless, it's the day to day interactions like these that build a genuine long term relationship.

1

They Support Each Other's Goals

Whether it's to get a promotion at work, make it through the teething phase, or to start your own business, healthy couples support each other's dreams. Even if they're different than their own.

2

They Use The Bathroom At The Same Time

Because showing together isn't for sex anymore — it's to save on your water bill.

3

They Let Their Guard Down

My husband and I frequently rap song lyrics back and forth, even though neither of us can rap. When you've been with someone long enough, you're relationship is less about keeping up appearance and more about having fun an being yourself together.

4

They Narrate Their Pet Or Child's Thoughts

Who needs Netflix when you can just narrate what's going on inside your puppy, or child's mind. (Bonus points if you have both a pet AND a child).

5

They Communicate Without Words

For better or worse, your facial expressions and mannerisms will become your second language.

6

They Say "I Love You"

It's an obvious one, but for a good reason. Saying "I love you" every day to you partner helps you both feel secure and comfortable.

7

They Text Each Other From The Same Room

When you become too lazy to ask your SO to bring you a glass of water and text it instead, you've reached a new level of "long term relationship".

8

They Hug

Hugging does more than just warm you up— research suggests that hugging releases oxytocin (the love hormone) that helps you bond and may even have anti-aging benefits. It gives the phrase "hug it out" a whole new meaning.

9

They Groom Each Other

And, of course, we'll save the worst for last. Bodily functions aren't off limits and that weird mole on your SO's back? It receives daily inspection.
