Are There Tunnels For Celebrity Moms At Cedars-Sinai?

by Keiko Zoll

With June just around the corner, we are mere days away from America's soon-to-be newest holiday, The Day Beyoncé Gave Birth To Her Twins Day. There are plenty of rumors swirling that Queen Bey intends to bless this world with her twins' presence at Hollywood's hospital of the stars: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in downtown Los Angeles, California. As private — though also tantalizingly cheeky — Beyoncé has been about the details throughout her pregnancy, keeping her labor and delivery under wraps is going to require near feats of superhuman ability. Which has led some fans to wonder: Are there really tunnels for celebrity moms at Cedars-Sinai?

I thought for sure this whole "tunnel under the hospital" business was total nonsense, so I emailed reps at Cedars-Sinai myself to get the scoop — but sadly, there's been no immediate response from hospital representatives. It was time to dig out my Nancy Drew flashlight and comb through the archives of the internet to find some clue as to this rumor about a maze of Disney World-like tunnels running under the Cedars-Sinai campus. One of the earliest pieces of evidence I could find for said mystery tunnels takes us all the way back to 2008 and Brit Brit's famous mental breakdown.

At the time, TV Guide reported, "Escorted by Dr. Phil, Britney on Saturday morning left Cedars-Sinai via an underground tunnel." E! Online attempted to find out about whether the secret tunnel at Cedars-Sinai really existed just days later. A spokesperson for the hospital at the time told E! Online, "We have no secret tunnels at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center." Well, that would settle the matter, right? Not so fast...

An in-depth profile of Cedars-Sinai appeared in The Hollywood Reporter in 2012, titled "The Secrets of Cedars-Sinai, Hollywood's Glamour Hospital." Ah, now we're getting somewhere. Writer Gary Baum noted that, at the time, 7,000 babies were delivered at Cedars-Sinai, which spanned a massive 24-acre campus. Baum pointed out that there is "no designated celebrity wing and no obvious extra security," but the hospital did offer deluxe maternity suites, which celeb mamas like Blac Chyna and Kim Kardashian were happy to book for their births.

So, while there probably aren't any secret tunnels underneath Cedars-Sinai, Baum's piece does include this crafty tidbit: When it's time for celebrity moms to give birth at Cedars-Sinai, many of them will come in through a back entrance typically used by hospital physicians. Apparently, this is well known among Hollywood's paparazzi, who will camp out around the area as a celebrity's due date nears.

For Beyoncé's sake, she better hope no one on her team likes Starbucks. According to a tabloid vet who spoke to Baum, it's the in-hospital Starbucks cafe that's the entourage hot spot. "We'll spot members of a star's entourage grabbing a latte. That's often the giveaway." Hear that, Jay Z? Better make sure you're brewing your own coffee at home and bringing a thermos when it's time for the twins to arrive.
