How To Have Pregnancy Sex In A Tub

by Lindsay E. Mack

Many pregnant women enjoy a fulfilling, adventurous sex life right up until the delivery date. In fact, trying out new locations and positions is more fun than ever. That said, pregnancy does entail a few extra cautions when it comes to location. This may lead you to wonder, "can you have sex in the tub when pregnant?" For some people, there's nothing like a sexy soak in the bath.

In general, most types of sex are safe during pregnancy. According to the Mayo Clinic, amniotic fluid and muscles of the uterus protect the growing baby, so sexual activity is unlikely to harm your baby. As long as the pregnancy is progressing without serious health complications, then intercourse is generally on the menu.

Going at it in the bathtub, however, adds another layer of complication. In most places, it does not appear that bathwater itself is harmful, so that is reassuring. According to Columbia University, however, STIs can still be transmitted through sex in the water, so keep this in mind if you and your partner are not fluid bonded. Staying away from potential infections is always sexy.

Next, there is the potential for slipping. For extra safety, you should put a nonslip mat on the tub. Additionally, using a stable sex position, such as woman-on-top, is smart. It may take a little maneuvering if you're in the latter stages of pregnancy, but that's part of the fun. For a long-term safety modification, there are are suction shower handles manufactured specifically for this purpose, as found on Amazon. If there's ever a time to provide for safe tub-based sex, pregnancy would be it.

You and your partner will also want to lube up for this experience. It may sound counterintuitive, but water sex can wash away the natural lubrication, making things uncomfortable down there. According to Buzzfeed, a silicone-based lube is the best choice for any kind of water sex, because water-based lubes will wash right off. Of course, this could make anything in the immediate vicinity super slippery, so use caution when getting in or out of the tub. In general, though, tub sex is an awesome option for expecting couples who are looking to spice things up a bit.
