Can You Swallow Semen While Pregnant? 5 Things To Know About Oral Sex During Pregnancy

Sex during pregnancy can be a dreaded affair for a variety of reasons. Thankfully, there’s oral sex. For those who missed out on Sex Ed (or don’t have a Skinemax subscription), oral sex is the stimulation of your partner’s genitals with your tongue, lips, or mouth – this includes sucking or licking a woman’s vagina or vulva (clitoris) or a man’s penis (fellatio). It’s also the ideal form of intercourse for pregnant women. But if this is your first time with a baby bump, you may have some questions about oral sex during pregnancy, like can you swallow semen while pregnant?

Now, provided your doctor has given you the green light, you can continue penetration well into your third trimester. And you may want to, given that a woman’s sex drive can increase drastically during pregnancy, according to The Bump. But not everyone is so keen on the idea of getting down with a burgeoning baby bump. Be it fears, insecurities, or medical issues, penetration is not always an option during those nine months. Oral sex, however, allows you to satisfy your sexual desires without the worries.

But as with pregnancy sex, you have a question or two about giving and receiving oral sex while pregnant. If you’re too shy to ask your doctor, I’m happy to provide the 411. If you’re considering going down on a partner during your pregnancy (or making them go down on you because damn it, you have needs too), here are five things to know about oral sex during during pregnancy.

1. Yes, You Can Swallow His Semen

It is perfectly safe to swallow semen while pregnant. In fact, some studies have shown that there are benefits to consuming a sperm cocktail, so to speak. A study in the Journal of Reproductive Immunology revealed that swallowing sperm may reduce the risk of preeclampsia. But that’s not all. In 2012, Slate shared findings from SUNY-Albany psychologist Gordon Gallup, which indicated that a little semen may be the cure to morning sickness. According to Gallup, “pregnant women vomit as a result of their bodies rejecting genetic material in the sperm as a foreign substance, but that by swallowing and ingesting the sperm of the baby’s father, they can build up immunity.” Not a bad reason to give your partner a morning BJ if you ask me.

2. Things May Get Messy

As levels of progesterone and estrogen continue to climb, Parents notes that a woman’s overall fluid volume increases by 50 percent! This can lead to some majorly juicy private parts. There is nothing inherently dangerous or worrying about the extra fluid, so if you or your partner are enjoying oral sex, don’t stop on the account of some extra flow.

3. Don’t Blow

Mayo Clinic notes that a sudden burst of air could block a blood vessel, causing potential problems for you and your child. But Mary Jane Minkin, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale Medical School, told Women’s Health the possibility of an air embolism is rare. In fact, she added that she has yet to see a case in her 40 years of work. So be careful, but don’t spend any time worrying about it when you are on the giving or receiving end of a good time.

4. Keep Tongues Out Of The Vaginas

Mouths are full of bacteria, which is the last thing you want entering your vagina (whether you’re pregnant or not.) When bacteria enters the vagina canal or uterus, it can cause infections that could lead to a variety of pregnancy issues, such as preterm labor or the need for antibiotics. Lick the outside of the vagina to your heart’s content, just refrain from pushing the tongue in any further.

5. Get Comfortable Before You Get Close

Pregnant ladies have needs that go beyond a comfy mattress.Grab the extra pillows you need for behind your neck and knees, find out what position works best for your legs, and don’t try to get fancy with the locale. Take it from someone who knows, hanging halfway off of a couch while your stomach bobs is not sexy, trust me!
