You Won't Believe How Big Dany's Dragons Are On 'Game Of Thrones'

by Megan Walsh

Daenerys' dragons have come a long way on Game of Thrones. They began life as fossilized eggs that were never expected to hatch until Daenerys herself was able to make it happen in the fiery inferno of Khal Drogo's funeral pyre. After that they spent some time growing up as adorable little CGI pipsqueaks that could roast meat on command, but those days are long gone. Now they're powerful, dangerous beasts who nevertheless have a soft spot for their human mom. They're also massive. But how big are Dany's dragons on Game of Thrones, exactly?

Daenerys' dragons were already getting out of hand due to their sheer size and firepower in previous seasons, which made her decide to keep them chained up in an attempt to keep people safe. But now they're allowed to fly free once again and their increasingly huge proportions mean they're pretty much unstoppable. According to Matt Shakman, one of the show's directors, Dany's dragons are bigger in Season 7 than ever before. He told Entertainment Weekly, "The dragons this year are the size of 747s. Drogon is the biggest of the bunch — his flame is thirty feet in diameter!"

Dany must be going broke buying them Dragon Chow.

In case you haven't been next to a Boeing 747 recently enough to imagine the dragons to scale, some pertinent measurements may help: the famously huge planes are 231 feet 10 inches long with a wingspan of just over 211 feet. They're 63 feet tall and weigh over 400,000 pounds when empty; their gross weight is a staggering 875,000 pounds. They can also carry well over 500 passengers.

It can be a little difficult to accurately pinpoint the size of a fictional creature, but the plane comparison paints a good picture of just how enormous Dany's dragons are and how crushing their weight must be. They're even larger than the largest living animal, the blue whale, which is 98 feet in length. Getting an estimate on the size of the dragons also indicates just how much damage they can do. How does one fight back against an animal the size of a plane who can barbecue you from a distance?

The answer to that question might have to wait for Season 7, though Dany's dragons already made it clear that they're not to be trifled with when they helped their mom take back Meereen in Season 6. With the gigantic dragons getting her back, there doesn't seem to be anything stopping Dany from snatching the Iron Throne once and for all.
