How To Take The Pottermore Patronus Quiz, Because We've Been Waiting Years For This

by Abby Norman

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling gave us eight books, a bunch of blockbuster movies, the sequel in the form of a play, The Cursed Child, and the digital world of Pottermore, where you can be part of the magic. You can find out which house you'd be sorted into, explore spells and potions, and read all about the history of Hogwarts. But fans always thought one thing was missing: a way to find out what their Patronus is. Rowling delivered, and now there's a feature on Pottermore that will tell you. Here's how to take the Patronus quiz on Pottermore, because you shouldn't have to wonder a moment longer.

If you log on to pottermore.com, you'll be immediately greeted by "Discover your Patronus," right on the homepage. In case you forgot, a Patronus is a difficult-to-master charm that summons a wizard's spirit guardian, usually taking the form of an animal. Your Patronus is usually a reflection of your true personality, and only those who are "pure of heart" are able to cast a Patronus spell.

Make sure you've joined or are logged in to Pottermore before you get started. The loading page has some magical animation and extremely chill music, so make sure your volume is turned up (got headphones? Even better).

Once you're all logged in, a quote from Remus Lupin, Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts, pops up to remind you what a Patronus is.

And then you're ready to start the quiz. But be warned — it's a timed quiz, and you're supposed to "go with your instincts," so don't overthink your answers too much.

The quiz instructs you first to "think of your happiest memory." Then you begin your journey through the forest, where several pairs or groups of words will appear before you. You're supposed to pick the first one you're drawn to without thinking about it for long — if you hesitate, a dementor could get you. Or not. What actually happens is after a few seconds it just auto-advances to the next question.

When you reach the end of the forest, click and drag your mouse to reveal your Patronus:

If you want to learn more about your Patronus, go back to your account's home page and select My Patronus to access writing by Rowling and features like" What is a Patronus?" that can give you more information. It also tells you the Patronus of all your favorite (and least favorite) characters.

And remember if you want to summon your Patronus, you must use the incantation:

Rowling herself even took the quiz (which she wrote, of course) and revealed her Patronus on Twitter — a heron.

But just so you know, you can't retake the Patronus quiz. I tried to since I goofed a lot while trying to take screenshots. Although, maybe there really is some magic in Pottermore, because an Ocicat (a cat that looks wild but really isn't) probably is pretty accurate.
