Nick & Vanessa Take On The Newlywed Game

by Megan Walsh

Nick Viall's tenure as The Bachelor came to a snowy close when he popped the question to Canadian teacher Vanessa Grimaldi, but the happily ever after seemed to end with more of a question mark than anything else. Fans were surprised by how the new couple acted during the After the Finale Rose special, because despite protestations of happiness Nick and Vanessa just seemed... awkward. However, their press tour didn't end there, and Nick and Vanessa's newlywed game on Jimmy Kimmel Live! showed a more united front than fans saw in the finale.

Kimmel handed Nick and Vanessa notecards and pens before proceeding to ask them questions to see how well they really knew each other. Based on After the Final Rose, that could have easily been a disaster, but instead Nick and Vanessa rose to the occasion – not that they were being asked particularly tough questions. The segment was light and funny; it wasn't designed to trip them up. Kimmel asked them four quick questions and gave them a prize for every correct answer: a cherry pitter, a turkey baster, and a panini press. And then there was the pièce de résistance: a set of plates with the faces of every past Bachelor and Bachelorette on them.

Kimmel asked if Nick and Vanessa knew each other's middle names, which they did: Nick's is Joseph and Vanessa doesn't have one (though Kimmel helpfully provided one, re-christening her Vanessa Phyllis). He grilled them on their astrological signs (both Libras, born two days apart) and celebrity crushes (Vanessa's is Rick Fox and Nick, clearly trying to win points, pretended he didn't have one). Nick and Vanessa made off with each and every prize.

But to win the set of plates (which Vanessa shadily pointed out had the faces of two of Nick's exes on them), they had to answer a big ticket question: where was the first place they made love (Side note, it's no longer 1961, so can society retire the phrase "make love"?)? Though contestants don't always confirm what went on in the fantasy suites (and Nick and Vanessa didn't get into the gory details), they both revealed that they slept together for the first time in Finland. Those turtlenecks and bobble hats must have really worked for Vanessa.

Despite the After the Final Rose weirdness, it seems like Nick and Vanessa do know a thing or two about one another despite getting engaged after just a few short weeks and living in different countries. Hopefully that bodes well for their future. Fingers crossed.
