These Memes About Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Engagement Just Won The Internet Today

by Kaitlin Kimont

To the entire world's delight, Kensington Palace announced the royal engagement of Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle on Monday morning. Fans of the 36-year-old Suits star and the 33-year-old prince immediately freaked out over the news and the internet promptly reacted by creating some pretty spot-on and hilarious Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement memes. And, of course, as memes tend to do, they perfectly capture what everyone across the globe is feeling right now and will definitely give you a much-needed belly laugh.

After spending a weekend feasting on mounds of turkey and probably diffusing one or two family fights at the Thanksgiving table — at least for those of us on the other side of the pond — Monday's news couldn't be more welcome. Prince Harry's father said in a statement released by Kensington Palace this morning that he was "delighted to announce" the pair's engagement and that "Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle's parents."

Although the two have been together since July 2016, it wasn't until recently that Prince Harry and Markle's relationship became officially official. Prior to Monday's announcement, much of their relationship was plastered on tabloid headlines and caught on paparazzi cameras. So even though the news wasn't necessarily a shock to the world, it still left many quite shook that they're basically out of the running.

People Are Really Having A Hard Time Accepting Their Engagement

Some Just Can't Handle The Excitement

Others Are Waiting For Things To Take A Turn

Prince Harry's engagement to Markle is not only historic because she would become the first American to marry into the royal family "to be given the title of Her Royal Highness (HRH)", as TIME reported, but the actress is also a woman of color, who was born in California to an African-American mother and white father.

"Given that she is a mixed-race Catholic divorcee from the United States, royal protocol would have forbidden the match," according to TIME. Although Queen Elizabeth had reportedly given her blessing to her grandson, who is fifth in line to the throne, Markle's race has been a disconcerting target of British tabloids, with one Daily Mail headline reading, "Harry's girl is (almost) straight outta Compton."

As TIME reported, the tabloids have been "criticized for dog-whistle racism in their coverage of her." And, according to The Guardian, that headline in particular was "believed to have angered the palace."

Still, it's incredibly unsettling this even has to be a conversation in 2017 and that racial undertones still creep up far too often. But, while people are on high-alert to shut down the next bout of racism, the world is still thrilled for the future husband and wife. For example, people can not get over the ring Markle is sporting.

The Ring! The Internet Is Blinded By The Diamonds & The Story Behind It

According to Marie Claire, Markle's gorgeous engagement ring reportedly has diamonds from Princess Diana's collection. As CNN's Max Foster shared in a tweet, Prince Harry designed the ring and the center diamond is from Botswana, "a country that holds special significance" for him as he's traveled there since he was a child and the couple has spent time there together. Foster's tweet also explained that the "two outside stones" are from his late mother's personal collection.

So, understandably, the internet is collectively weeping right now. Of course, though, after we've all blubbered our eyes out, there were those happy to provide to the world the perfect dose of humor today.

People Are Having A LOT Of Fun With This News

Clearly, this excitement isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. And, now there's a royal wedding to look forward to, which is set to happen in just a matter of months. Honestly, Spring 2018 can't come soon enough.
