Wren Returned To 'Pretty Little Liars,' Kind of

by Allison Piwowarski

The Pretty Little Liars finale was definitely going to give fans answers to the seven million questions they had after 7 (long) seasons. And, sure enough, many of those lingering theories were addressed, including one very important one: how was Wren involved in all of this? As the promo suggested, Wren did return to the finale, but not in the way many would expect. So, what happened to Wren on Pretty Little Liars?

Wren was very much a key player in the plot of Pretty Little Liars, but going into the final season, we didn't know how he was going to be looped into the big final reveal. Going into the last episode, we still didn't know. All we knew about Wren was that he was at the airport with "Spencer" and that was it. That is, of course, before we knew that Spencer was a twin, and that wasn't really Spencer at the airport. The person Ezra saw at the airport was Alex Drake, or A.D., Spencer's twin sister from England who Wren had been working with alongside Charlotte.

We learn that Wren and Alex loved each other. Or so it seemed. The two were very close after coming in contact at a bar Alex worked at. Once she knew of the world she was missing in Rosewood, the two joined forces and the rest was kind of history. Wren introduced Charlotte to her long lost sister, Alex; Alex asked Wren to shoot her so she was an exact copy of Spencer, just your average, run-of-the-mill love story.

That is, until Alex wanted it all.

For Alex, the life she was given felt unfair. To her, Spencer was given it all — and Alex wanted that. To get the life she felt she deserved, she had to cut ties with Wren, which meant she needed to kill him. We don't know how she did it, but we do know that she had his ashes turned into a diamond. And now, she wears him around her neck. Again, just your average, run-of-the-mill love story.

We also learned in the finale that Wren was the father of Emily and Ali's twins, meaning he'll always be involved in the Liars' story, even if they don't know it. So, while Wren met a rather unexpected death, he really did end up playing a huge part in the entire story.
