What Happens To Luke Skywalker In 'The Last Jedi'? The 'Star Wars' Franchise Continues To Awe Fans

The new Star Wars movie has been something fans have been waiting for since, honestly, the first Star Wars movie. The Last Jedi — a title that sent fans into a frenzy — continues the ongoing battle of light and dark. For decades, fans have rooted for Luke Skywalker, one of the franchises leading protagonists. The Last Jedi is a big film for Luke, but in a way that completely differs from anything else in the franchise, and the final moments may leave fans asking what happens to Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. Mark Hamill said himself, Skywalker may no longer be the protagonist in the newest film, but that doesn't mean his journey for good is over. In fact, it may be more important than ever when it comes to The Resistance's fight against the First Order.

Warning: This post contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Continue at the risk of learning plot points from the latest film.

At the beginning of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rey finds Luke on the planet Ahch-To. After giving him his father's lightsaber, and Luke throwing it over a cliff into a field of Porgs, Rey finds herself increasingly trying to convince Luke to help continue the Jedi, despite his disinterest. It is a major part of the film, the two of them on the planet in isolation, despite the moments when

At points, Luke teaches Rey about The Force. Over the course of the two-and-a-half hour film, Luke becomes more and more connected to his Jedi senses and eventually uses his doppelgänger abilities to create a perfect illusion of himself in the peak moment of battle against Kylo Ren.

Now, the reason this is so important to the film is because many fans watching don't realize that he isn't actually there, with the Resistance, fighting and battling against Kylo. He uses himself as a distraction in order to allow the Resistance to escape from their momentary bunker of safety, and in doing so, seemingly sacrifices himself to get them out of there. Except he isn't harmed. Despite Kylo using all of the ammunition he has on Luke, Luke is unaffected — which is when it is revealed that he is still on the planet Rey found him on.

And then, just like that, Luke Skywalker completely disappears.

We've seen it before in the franchise. In that moment (that may or may not have left the theater audience screaming), Luke became one with the force, and like others to come before him, he "disappeared."

What does that mean for Luke Skywalker? He fully achieved peace and balance and became one with the force. Rey even felt it. After he disappeared, she said she could feel no pain or sadness.

And he's not the first one for this to happen to. We saw Yoda in The Last Jedi, who also became one with the force. The same happened with Obi-Wan Kenobi, who became one with the force in Star Wars. This differs from Force Ghosts, but let's not count our chickens before they hatch. There's still time, right?

We'll hopefully see what this means for Luke in upcoming episodes of the film franchise. Hamill was supposedly surprised at the size of his role in The Force Awakens, and fans definitely can always use more Skywalker, so hopefully they give the people what they want and bring him back in some shape or form... I'm sure we'd all be thrilled to find out he is a Force Ghost now.
