What You Need In A Friendship, Based On Your Astrological Sign

by Sarah Bunton

I'm not one to put too much stock in things I can't verify with my own personal experience. But I can't ignore just how well some people's personality traits match up perfectly with their astrological sign. A few of those folks, who fall in a very special category of friendship, will be by your side through thick and thin, break-ups and exes, makeovers and hot messes. But in order for you to put in just as much as you're getting back out, you might want to consider what you need in a friendship, based on your astrological sign.

No one wants to feel emotionally or mentally spent at the end of the day and, more times than not, your friend is the person you choose to turn to for a pick-me-up or a good old fashioned venting session. So to make sure you're in the healthiest, most productive and beneficial friendship, it makes sense to think about what kinds of things give you life.

From ambitious go-getters and stubborn alphas to spiritual souls and quiet leaders, every sign in the zodiac has its own particular strengths, deficits, and qualities all their own. So check out what you need in a friendship, according to your astrological sign.

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

When most people think of Aries, they either think of the stubborn ram or the God of War (though it's spelled differently). Why? Well, the first sign of the zodiac sets the bar on confidence and determination since they are "first." Though it's great to have such an ambitious personality, an Aries can get defensive when things don't go their way. That's why a fire sign like Aries needs a friend who can stand the heat and extinguish any flames before they get out of hand.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

Just like it's mascot, the bull, a Taurus has a strong-willed nature. Initially, people might be intimidated by their intense style, but it's good to know that a Taurus is just as fierce when it comes to defending friendships. If you're a Taurus, you'll thrive with a few, close friends as opposed to surrounding yourself with a hundred acquaintances.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

The social butterfly of the gang, Geminis are the life of the party. There's an emphasis on "butterfly,"since they are just about as flighty and unpredictable as one, too. That's why a Gemini needs consistency in a friendship. Though they can be impulsive and indecisive at times, having a reliable friend who can help navigate the ups and downs is priceless for a Gemini.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

Instead of a crab, think of a mama bear when it comes to the fourth sign of the zodiac because a Cancer tends to be the nurturing den mother out of the group. While they are busy consoling and comforting others, they often don't take the time to care for themselves. That's why a Cancer needs someone to lean on in a friendship since they are exhausted from being everyone else's pillar of strength.

Leo (July 23 to Aug. 22)

Just like the bold image of a lion, a Leo is confident, the center of attention, and can border on being prideful. The fifth sign of the zodiac loves being the leader of the pack and enjoys all the perks and recognition that come with that role. So, kind of like Enterouage or "Jenny from the block," a Leo needs someone to keep them grounded and away from destructive drama.

Virgo (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)

I'm not sure what sign Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock Holmes is, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was a Virgo. The sixth sign of the zodiac is known for being analytical, precise, and can come off as cold and calculated to those who don't know them well. So it makes sense that a Virgo needs warmth in a friendship. While they look calm on the outside, they're going bonkers in their "mind castle" and could use a calm Watson-type.

Libra (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)

Often represented with scales, a Libra is all about being balanced, fair, and has a strong sense of community and loyalty. Just like an unbiased judge, the seventh sign of the zodiac tends to play the peacekeeper role in the group. That's why a Libra needs harmony in a friendship with someone who dislikes conflict just as much as they do.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)

Scorpios are known for their intensity and penchant for taking things to the extreme. Out of a group, they're the ones most likely to suggest a dare or even be considered the "bad influence." Yet, behind the fiery attitude, a Scorpio needs a trustworthy, low-key friend since dishonesty is the one thing they'll hold grudge about for eternity.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)

When describing Sagittarius, inspiring and encouraging are two of the best words to use. You know Kenneth on 30 Rock? He'd probably be a Sagittarius. Good-natured and optimistic, a Sagittarius needs positiveness in a friendship and benefits from a friend who is just as dedicated as they are.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)

A fun combination of half-goat and half-fish, a Capricorn is both hardworking and always on the move, just like the animals that represent the tenth sign of the zodiac. This ambitious and unbending attitude is why a Capricorn needs patience and sensitivity in a friendship.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)

Aquarians are definitely unique. On one hand, the eleventh sign of the zodiac is known for their philanthropic traits. Yet, on the other hand, they can go about trying to achieve their goals—no matter how altruistic—in an eccentric way, which can be off-putting for some. In short, if you're born under the sign of Aquarius, you need an anchor in friendship to keep you tethered in a sea of endless possibility. Your instinct may tell you to break free, but you can't cultivate a good relationship without putting in time and effort.

Pisces (Feb. 19 to March 20)

Similar to Aquarius, a Pisces is extremely compassionate and giving. Yet, where an Aquarian has the inner drive to follow their own path, those born under the twelfth sign of the zodiac can be generous to a fault and are at risk for being taken advantage of in friendships. A Pisces needs a loyal, protective friend to keep drama queens and narcissists at bay, allowing their kind nature to blossom.
