Today Judge Merrick Garland's two daughters became very high profile. Their Dad, already the powerful chief judge of the D. C. circuit court, was just launched into the national spotlight thanks to his immensely high-profile nomination to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama. And, along with the country's interest in the nominee and the political fight that his Senate confirmation hearings just sparked, America wants to know more about the Garlands kids, Rebecca and Jessica. So who are Merrick Garland's kids? Well, we don't know much yet, but from what we do know, they're two fearless, accomplished women their dad obviously adores.
The first tidbit about the Garland daughters came in their Dad's own speech, where he explained that his eldest, Rebecca wasn't in the Rose Garden for his nomination, because when Obama called him to inform him of his decision to give Garland the nod, Rebecca was off the grid hiking without cell phone reception. The little anecdote gave the crowd a chuckle, because the idea that even a Supreme Court nominee can't always get in touch with his grown children on the biggest day of his life is too adorable. But it told people everything they need to know about the love he has for his daughter, who he proudly referred to as "adventurous."
Rebecca is in for quite a surprise once she gets back in range.
Beyond knowing that she loves a good hike in a remote locale, we know both she and her younger sister Jessica are graduates of Yale. Rebecca Garland, according to her LinkedIn page, graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in psychology, and she currently works as a pharmaceuticals consultant with Trinity Partners. She also attended the uber exclusive Sidwell Friends in Bethesda, where the Obama daughters go to school.
The youngest Garland daughter, Jessica is also a graduate of Yale and, during her time on campus, was involved with the Prison Project, a social justice advocacy group. Here she is in 2014 being interviewed about the Prison Project.
Luckily, Jessica was able to be there to see her Dad humbly accept the Supreme Court nomination, sitting next to her mother, Lynn. Heavy reported that her LinkedIn page, which has since been made private, says she is currently a grad student at Cambridge.
Here's Jessica at today's White House announcement.
While we don't know much about the Garland ladies, it's easy to see they're two highly educated women who are pretty fearless. And, their dad obviously adores them. I can't wait to hear about how Rebecca reacts once she hears the news of her father's nomination.
