Someone Is After Lemony Snicket On 'ASOUE'

(Warning: this post contains unfortunate spoilers from Episode 8.) There has been a lot to process throughout the first season of Netflix's new show A Series of Unfortunate Events. But while Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire have hopscotched to various guardians throughout their tragic journey, we as the audience have been able to rely on a very helpful guide: the narrator, Lemony Snicket. But an interesting thing happened recently, which left me concerned with his fate. Who is chasing Lemony Snicket on ASOUE?

It all started when he began explaining how shouting fire in a public place can cause chaos, whether there is an actual fire or not. However, it can also save lives by causing a great distraction that can allow you to escape an unfortunate situation — one that our narrator appeared to currently be in. "For example, you may be trapped in a motel room with your enemies waiting outside," Lemony explained, while looking down at two suspicious men lurking below his apartment building. "Shouting fire will cause the kind of chaos that will allow you to escape undetected, therefore the life it saves will be your own." He then proceeded to yell "FIRE" himself, before it cut back to Violet doing the exact same thing.

Now, there are a couple of different ways we can interpret this. Either Lemony was just playing out the situation for dramatic effect in order to give us an example of the fire-yelling situation he was describing. Or he was actually running away from those men who appear to be after him for some reason. Either seem possible at this point, but considering he was actually packing up his most treasured possessions — including the 200 page book written by the woman he loved — it certainly felt like he was trying to get away from these guys for real. But if that's the case, then who is it that's after him and why?

Throughout the entire time we've known him, Lemony has seemed like a decent guy, always providing insight and guidance throughout this unfortunate tale of woe. However, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding this guy. For instance, not only was he mentioned by the actual characters on the show multiple times, but at the end of the final episode we learn that he went to school with Count Olaf during their days at Prufrock Preparatory School. Could these men be working for Count Olaf or is Lemony involved in something else that's completely separate from the Baudelaire story? Book spoilers ahead!

Readers of the books know that Lemony is continuously being chased after by the police for crimes of which he's been falsely accused. He's also always trying to hide from his many enemies who make up the evil part of the secret organization Volunteer Fire Department (V.F.D.). So odds are that Lemony is running away from one of these two groups. But as for whether or not he ever ends up getting caught... you'll just have to wait until Season 2 to find out.
