Who Is Lady Gaga On 'AHS: My Roanoke Nightmare'? You May Have Missed Her

by Megan Walsh

Fans finally caught a glimpse of Lady Gaga in American Horror Story Season 6 Episode 2, but her first appearance was very blink-and-you'll-miss-it. Her character this year is a far cry from the cool glamour of the Countess, and Gaga was nearly unrecognizable in the background of her first scene. Her second role on the series is about as far from her first as it could be. But who is Lady Gaga on AHS: My Roanoke Nightmare?

It's still not entirely clear. Gaga didn't have any lines, and she didn't have much to do besides lurk menacingly over Kathy Bates' shoulder. It does seem like her character belongs to an earlier timeline because of her old-fashioned clothes, and her obvious association with the weird crew of human-sacrificing forest-dwelling potential puritans. Gaga looks totally different: she's dirty, her hair is dark, her teeth have definitely seen better days. The only nod to fashion is the jaunty antlered skull perched on her head. It's clear that whoever Gaga's character is, she's fallen on some seriously hard times. There is a chance she might be a member of the lost colony of Roanoke, from which the show's title takes its inspiration.

Lady Gaga only had one extremely brief scene in Season 6 Episode 2, so before the show reveals more about her character all anyone can do is speculate. There were a few important women in the real life Roanoke Colony, so if AHS is drawing from history to create its characters, it is possible that Gaga could be playing a version of one of them. There is Eleanor Dare, who was the daughter of Roanoke's governor and the mother of the first English child born in the New World, named Virginia Dare. Eleanor was credited with creating a series of stones that explained the fate of the lost colony, though most of them were determined to be fakes. Regardless of the stones' authenticity, Eleanor is a big part of Roanoke's legend – and so is Virginia, who has spawned her fair shade of strange stories.

Is Gaga playing either Eleanor or Virginia Dare? As of right now, there's honestly no way to know. It's impossible to say with total conviction whether the strange colonial-dressing characters even are members of the Roanoke Colony, but that seems like more of a guarantee. Gaga playing Eleanor or Virginia is merely one of a few possibilities, an educated guess – but you never really know with AHS. She could be playing someone totally original. The only way to find out is to keep watching.
