Grease: Live is hitting screens at the end of January as a live production airing on Fox, and it's shaping up to be a fantastic show. The remake stars some fairly big names, including Carly Rae Jepsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Jesse J, Keke Palmer, Joe Jonas, Julianne Hough, and Aaron Tveit. Kether Donohue will pay Jan, one of the Pink Ladies originally played by Jamie Donnelly.
Donohue, a native New Yorker, started her career as a voice actress for Japanese manga series back in 1998, and she's since climbed up to nab roles in Pitch Perfect, Perfect Couples, and the TV series You're the Worst. The 30-year-old isn't quite as recognizable as the rest of the Pink Ladies in Grease: Live, but she was recently dubbed "the best on You're the Worst," and nominated for a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress on the show. (We'll find out if she wins the award on January 17, when the Critics' Choice Awards air.)
Donohue seems stoked to join the Grease: Live cast, and since joining, has shared some fantastic videos of her and other Pink Ladies killing it. Can I have your dance skills, please, Kether Donohue?
She has also been incredibly, refreshingly honest with the media, and has an excellent knack for humor. In an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in December, Donohue talked about being an unemployed actress in New York with a hilarious candidness, saying, "It was awful. I was so unemployed that the unemployment office turned me down. ... I was just embarrassed to be myself, like you know when you wake up in the morning, and you're just like, 'Ugh, I'm embarrassed'? Even for my agent, when he would call me, I was embarrassed for him that he represented me."
In that same interview, she talked about getting her "vagina waxed" unnecessarily — "I just wanted to be fresh for the audition!" — which instantly makes me put her in the same honest comedy category as Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer.
I have a feeling Donohue's fans already know she's going to kill it in Grease: Live. Between her barely-making-it-in-New-York backstory (hey, a girl's got to commiserate!), her wise-cracking personality, and behind-the-scenes shenanigans, I'm excited to see her take on Jan's role.
Tune into Fox on Jan. 31 from 7 to 10 p.m. to catch Grease: Live. I know I'll be watching.
