Who Will Return To ‘Frozen 2’?

by Josie Rhodes Cook

Good news, Disney fans. Disney has announced the release date for Frozen 2, the somewhat long-awaited sequel to the 2013 film starring Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel. Frozen 2 is set to arrive in theaters just prior to Thanksgiving on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019. That's not too bad, huh? Only, what, six years after the first movie? But with this news comes other questions about the follow-up to the massively popular animated feature. Who will return to Frozen 2? Will the songs be as good? Will there even be songs this time around?

Collider reported that an updated Disney calendar of release dates was confirmed on Tuesday, and announcements were made in regards to other planned movies such as Star Wars: Episode IX, Indiana Jones 5, and Jon Favreau‘s The Lion King.

Teen Vogue reported that, last month, Kristen Bell hinted at some details about Frozen 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the smash hit featuring the beloved characters of Elsa and Anna, voiced by Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, respectively. So, will the behind-the-scenes players of the royal sisters return to their roles in the sequel?

Teen Vogue noted that Menzel and Bell are likely to reprise their roles in the new animated film. But Collider only reported that Josh Gad is confirmed to step back into his role as the voice of Olaf.

Variety reported that the release date just announced for Frozen 2 was previously held for "Untitled Disney Animation," and didn't list any confirmations for returning actors. Screen Rant reported that Bell, Menzel, and Gad are "expected to return," but no definitive confirmations there either.

However, Screen Rant also reported that the directors of Frozen, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, are expected to return to do the sequel too.

Josh Gad is almost definitely involved, because in addition to Collider's confirmation of his return, he tweeted on Tuesday, "Mark your calendars. FROZEN 2 is coming NOVEMBER 27 2019 @WaltDisneyCo @DisneyAnimation #Frozen2," along with a GIF of Olaf.

Idina Menzel didn't appear to tweet about the latest news on the Frozen 2 sequel, although she tweeted on April 15, saying "My new side project: Idina and the Elsas. On tour summer 2017. #IdinaWorldTour"

On the other hand, Kristen Bell did get in on the Frozen 2 news, tweeting, "Quick weather forecast from your favorite disney princess' sister: Theaters are gonna get Frozen on November 27, 2019! Woo Hoo!!!!," along with an embedded tweet that linked back to the Disney animation Twitter account announcing the release date.

Between that and recently dishing to Teen Vogue, it's probably safe to say Bell will return to the Frozen 2 sequel as well. Entertainment Weekly reported that Bell and Menzel are expected, but not officially confirmed, to come back for the movie.

A stage musical of Frozen will also debut on Broadway in the spring of 2018, according to Entertainment Weekly. So if late 2019 is just too long to wait for some fans, there will at least be some new Frozen franchise installments in the meantime.

Who else will return to the Frozen sequel, Frozen 2? November 2019 is quite a ways away, so there's plenty of time for other established characters to come back on board — or for new characters and actors to be announced. Fans will just have to stay tuned.
