Will Maddie Ziegler Be On 'SNL' With Sia? Here's Why She Should Be

by Jenn Rose

Donald Trump may be all set to host Saturday Night Live this weekend, but to be honest, I’m way more interested in Sia’s performance — and wondering if she’ll be bringing her favorite backup dancer along for the ride. Because let’s be real, if Maddie Ziegler came on SNL with Sia again, the night would basically be perfect. Between The Donald’s sure-to-be... interesting antics, and Sia and Ziegler’s always on-point (albeit super weird) performances, that’s some quality television right there.

You may know Ziegler from Dance Moms, but she really skyrocketed to fame in May of 2014 when Ziegler performed in Sia’s “Chandelier” video. The Grammy-nominated video features the dancer dressed as a pint-sized Sia, spinning and leaping around a dismal-looking apartment, and ended up scoring a Best Choreography prize at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. It’s been parodied like a gazillion times in the last year (and if you check it out, it’s pretty easy to see why).

Sia made her SNL debut this past January, appearing on the mid-season premiere with host Kevin Hart. Her first act, “Chandelier,” featured a mime signing the lyrics to the song, while the second, “Elastic Heart,” featured Ziegler and another dancer, once again donning the now-iconic platinum blonde wig and nude leotard. It wasn’t the first time the look had been featured on the show; last year’s Halloween episode featured a sketch with both Jim Carrey and Kate McKinnon donning the outfit and recreating Ziegler’s dance as they ran through the studio. Still, I think Ziegler did it better:

And those aren’t the only times the pair have worked together. Ziegler also appeared alongside Shia LeBeouf in the “Elastic Heart” video, which drew controversy for its depiction of the young star wrestling with the actor in a cage. Many viewers were uncomfortable with the age difference between the two, and called the choreography “suggestive.” A third video, “Big Girls Cry,” is comprised entirely of a tight shot of Ziegler making faces and waving her arms around in a display of some sort of manic, interpretive voguing.

Sia has also written a film that will once again star Ziegler. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sia plans to direct the film, which is based on a short story the singer wrote years ago. "I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I wanted to make a movie because I thought it would be seen as a vanity project because I was a singer,” she told the outlet. “And then last year, after I made the ‘Chandelier’ video, I realized that I was pretty good at directing, so I felt a little bit braver."

So will Ziegler dust off that nude leotard once more, and tag along to Studio 8H? I for one can’t wait to find out. If she does, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be weird and wonderful.
