More 'Prison Break' May Not Happen

by Zakiya Jamal

These days it seems like a lot of shows are getting a second life and Prison Break is no exception. The fourth season of the popular series ended back in 2009, which is why fans were very excited to learn brothers Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) were returning for a fifth season this year. As Season 5 comes to a close, fans can't help but wonder if Prison Break will return for Season 6. Right now, the show's fate is very much up in the air.

The fifth season was actually meant to be a one-off miniseries, nine-episode event, that takes place seven years after the straight to DVD film Prison Break: The Final Break. In the film, Michael "died," but obviously in the new revival it was revealed that he was in fact somehow alive.

Since the miniseries wasn't meant to be a full-on reboot of the show, it'd be surprising if it does continue with a sixth season after this. However, the idea hasn't been totally ruled out just yet. During the Fox Upfronts earlier this month, FOX Television Group CEO Dana Walden stated that they'd "definitely consider doing more episodes." She went on to add that: "I know [the producers] are thinking about it." Hmm, interesting.

However, fans shouldn't get their hopes up that a Season 6 would be coming anytime soon. Walden also said that the show may continue on, but not as an every season series. Instead, FOX and the producers would "want to make it special," which may come in the form of intermittent encores. So it looks like Prison Break may get more of a miniseries treatment again in the future, rather than continuous, ongoing seasons. Either way, more Prison Break is better than no Prison Break, right?

Still, nothing has really been confirmed yet, so this may be the end of the road for this popular jail break series or it could be the start of a whole new era for the show. No matter what happens, fans will definitely want to tune in for the Season 5 finale.

Michael faces an epic showdown with the villainous Jacob and as always it seems like just when Michael was about to lose, he has yet another trick up his sleeve. So will Michael prevail or will Jacob somehow still come out on top?

The season finale of Prison Break airs on May 30 at 9 p.m. ET on FOX.
