The Fate Of 'Master Of None' Is Up In The Air

by Zakiya Jamal

The second season of Aziz Ansari's popular Netflix comedy Master of None is finally here. As with most Netflix shows, the entire season became available for streaming on Friday, May 12 and fans will of course binge watch the whole season in one sitting. (Or, at least, this fan will.) Once done, viewers may find themselves wondering: will there be a Master of None Season 3? Unfortunately, there may not be a third installment in the future.

During a recent interview with Vulture, Ansari revealed that he's not sure if there will be a Season 3. "I wouldn't be surprised if I need a looonng break before I could come back to it," he said, which definitely doesn't rule the possibility out, but it's also far from a confirmation. The show, which is loosely based on Ansari's own life, follows Dev as he struggles with his acting career and relationships. The first season left off with Dev breaking up with his girlfriend Rachel and moving to Italy to study pasta-making in culinary school. It's unclear if that actually turned into a career change for Dev, but based on the trailer for Season 2, he eventually does make his way back home to New York.

For Ansari, who writes the show with friend Alan Young, a lot of the plot does come from his own personal experience and he believes he has run out of material.

"I've got to become a different guy before I write a third season, is my personal thought," he said in the same Vulture interview. "I've got to get married or have a kid or something. I don't have anything else to say about being a young guy being single in New York eating food around town all the time."

Though I personally think I could watch another season of exactly that, it's easy to see where Ansari is coming from. When the show is based on yourself, it's hard not to feel like you're being repetitive or redundant and understandably he doesn't want to do another season unless he's sure it can surpass the season before it. So maybe taking some time off would be a good move for the show. Plus, just because Season 3 might not come in the next year or so, doesn't necessarily mean it won't ever happen. Isn't it better to have to wait a bit longer for a third season and have it be good rather than get a Season 3 immediately that falls short of its potential? I'd like to think so. Besides, Ansari didn't say he's definitely taking a hiatus, so maybe there's nothing to worry about and Season 3 will come sooner than fans think.

Either way, as long as Ansari continues to make hilarious content, whether it's with another season of Master of None or something else, fans will be happy.
