Disney+ Is Giving Willow The Limited Series Treatment

Willow is back to save the world.

It has been 34 years since Willow Ufgood first set out on his quest to protect a very special baby girl from the evil Queen Bavmorda, and now he’s back for more. A brand new Willow series coming to Disney+ promises to finally finish the much-loved story of Willow, baby Elora Danan... and even Madmartigan. Here’s everything we know so far.

The magic continues on Disney+.

Cast your minds back to 1988, when we first saw a baby girl left in a river and rescued by magician and farmer Willow Ufgood and his two children, Ranon and Mims. Willow (played by Warwick Davis) is asked by the High Aldwin to take this special baby girl to a safe person, but when Willow discovers she is actually Elora Danan, the person who is destined to bring about the downfall of sorceress Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh), he decides to protect her. Along with allies like fallen knight Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), sorceress Fin Raziel (Patricia Hayes) and other magical creatures, Willow goes into hiding with the baby girl to keep her from being killed by Queen Bavmorda.

Warwick Davis is back as an “unlikely hero.”

The new series on Disney+ picks up years after the 1988 movie left off, but with one important familiar face. A first look trailer for the series sees Davis back as Willow, still performing magic and living in a world where mythical creatures have been flourishing. But darkness is descending once more, and he finds a new group of misfits to join him again as an “unlikely hero” charged with saving the world.

Val Kilmer will be a “huge part” of Willow.

There has been much discussion about whether or not Val Kilmer will be back to reprise his role as Madmartigan, and executive producer Joseph Kasdan told Yahoo! Entertainment that he will, indeed, be a “huge part” of Willow. “Val’s a huge part of this, and the first conversation I had, when Warwick and I got the green light to do this, was with Val,” Kasdan said. “We wanted his character to be a part of the story. We wanted him to be in the show.” While Kasdan noted that Kilmer was unable to join the cast for filming in Wales due to Covid-19, he reassured fans, “He is in the show in a big way. And we’re pretty excited about it. Madmartigan lives on.”

When does Willow premiere?

Willow has a release date set, so mark your calendars for when it premieres on Disney+ on Nov. 30, 2022.

Is Willow appropriate for kids?

Willow is not yet rated, but the original movie had a PG rating and this seems like it will probably be the same for the follow-up series.

How to watch the original movie.

You can stream the original Willow film with a Disney+ subscription, even just to get immersed back into that magical world of brownies, sorcerers, and trolls. And an unlikely hero who is braver than he seems.
