12 Movie Halloween Costumes For Kids, Because There Are Enough Little Pumpkins

by Mishal Ali Zafar

If you're like me, you begin planning your kid's Halloween costumes months ahead of time. You want to make sure they are excited and thrilled with their costumes, so they feel like the coolest kid on the trick-or-treating block. (And, let's be honest, you want some recognition for finding an awesome costume.) While witches, goblins, and pumpkins all make great traditional kid costumes, this year you may want to spice things up with some movie Halloween costumes for kids. Whether it's a character from your child's most loved animated film or from a movie you adored as a child, finding a costume that brings some life and love to the season is well worth wearing.

Some movie character costumes are readily available at retailers like Amazon, Target, and Walmart, or Party City, but for some you can just dig in your closets and find what you need. If your little one has a favorite film, that's obviously a great place to get some inspiration, but literally nobody (especially me) will fault you for choosing a movie Halloween costume based off of one of your favorites. So get your candy and popcorn ready for these 12 movie-inspired kids' costumes for Halloween.

1

'It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown'

No Halloween can ever be complete without watching the classic, It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. If you’ve made this a Halloween favorite for your kids, then you’ll love to dress them up as their favorite characters from the movie. You can get either a Charlie Brown Costume ($37, Target), a Lucy costume ($38, Target), or put together your own Linus costume with a striped red shirt ($12, Amazon), black shorts ($18, Amazon), black shoes ($20, Amazon), red socks ($8, Amazon), and a light blue baby blanket ($7, Amazon). For props they can carry a pumpkin, a “Welcome Great Pumpkin” sign, and a plush snoopy ($12, Amazon). Just remind them never to jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker.

2

'Justice League'

While it won’t be released until two weeks after Halloween, the new Justice League movie trailers are everywhere and are inspiring kids to choose from a variety of superheroes. They can fight crime as either Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg, or Aquaman. You can pick up a Batman costume ($30, Party City), Flash costume ($30, Party City), Cyborg costume ($40, Party City), Superman costume ($30, Party City), Wonder Woman costume ($30, Party City), or an Aquaman costume ($25, Party City). Your kids will be able to trick or treat while they simultaneously save the world.

3

'E.T. The Extraterrestrial'

One of the best sci-fi alien movies for kids is E.T. the Extraterrestrial. Elliot and Gertie costumes are super simple, but the best part is that you’ll be getting wearable clothes as opposed to a costume that gets worn once. For Elliot you can get a red hoodie ($15, Old Navy), a pair of blue jeans ($22, Old Navy), and an E.T. toy ($13, Toys R’ Us). For his little sister Gertie, all you need is a set of denim overalls ($20, The Children’s Place) a striped turtleneck ($7, OshKosh B’Gosh), with hair up in two ponytails, and a flower pot in hand. All that’s left is to make sure they're able to phone home.

4

'Trolls'

If your kids love a story about happiness, then they’re sure to have loved Trolls. This colorful, musical adventure may inspire your kids to dress up as their favorite characters from the movie. For Poppy, you can get a girl’s Poppy costume ($35, JC Penney) and for Branch you can get the Branch deluxe costume ($37, Target). They can sing and dance their way through the neighborhood as they trick or treat this Halloween.

5

'Back To The Future'

One of the all time greatest time traveling movies was Back to the Future, so why not change history by dressing up like Marty McFly and Doc Brown? All you need is a Marty McFly costume ($40 to $60, Halloween Costumes), which includes the shirt, denim jacket, and puffy vest. For accessories you can grab a pair of kids aviator sunglasses ($8, Amazon) and print out a “Save The Clocktower” flyer. For the mad, genius scientist, you’ll need a Doc Brown costume ($30 to $40, Halloween Costumes), which comes with a jumpsuit, wig, and goggles, so you can grab a set of yellow gloves ($2, Amazon) if you’d like. All that’s left is finding a working hoverboard and Delorean. The rest can be Halloween history, or future, whichever you prefer.

6

'Charlotte's Web'

An all-time favorite book and movie for kids is Charlotte’s Web, and it’s super easy to put together a costume for Fern. All you’ll need is a plain or plaid button shirt ($18 to $30, Amazon), a pair of denim overalls ($31 to $36, Amazon), Yellow rain coat ($17 to $32, Amazon), and her best friend Wilbur ($40, Amazon). You don’t have to worry about Wilbur as he goes trick or treating because he’s one smart pig.

7

'Indiana Jones'

Whether you have a girl or boy, if your kid is full of energy, and ready to face snake pits and crocodiles, then there’s no better hero than Indiana Jones. For the costume you can grab an Indiana Jones costume ($29, Amazon), which comes with the brown jacket and attached shirt, pants, and a hat. To accessorize you can add an Indiana Jones messenger bag ($8, Amazon), a whip ($8, Amazon), or a treasure map ($3, Amazon) that will lead your little Indy on a Halloween adventure.

8

'Harry Potter'

This Halloween, leave the magic to the wizards. While Muggles may get their share of the treats, it’s really only Harry Potter that can get the trick part right. To dress up as Harry (or Hermione), you can get a Gryffindor robe ($22, Amazon), Gryffindor tie ($5, Amazon), white button down shirt ($14, Old Navy), Harry Potter eyeglasses ($3, Amazon), and wand ($8, Amazon). You can have them carry a plush owl ($11, Amazon) just in case they need to send a letter.

9

'The LEGO Ninjago Movie'

Whether your child wants to build bricks, battle evil villains, or save the world, they can go trick-or-treating as their favorite characters from The LEGO Ninjago Movie. They can pick their favorite ninja, with a Lloyd costume ($27, Walmart), Kai costume ($27, Walmart), Jay costume ($27, Walmart), or ice master Zane costume ($37, Walmart).

10

'Despicable Me'

If your kids are as happy as minions, you can channel any of the Despicable Me movies for Halloween. Your kids can dress up as their favorite characters with a Minion girl costume ($17, Walmart), Minion boy costume ($17, Walmart), Agnes costume ($22, Walmart), or the Fluffy Unicorn costume ($17, Walmart). Add some bananas to the mix and you'll be good to go.

11

'Kung Fu Panda'

If your kids love the action of Kung Fu Panda, then they’ll love to dress up as their favorite fighting warriors from the movies. There is the Kung Fu Panda costume ($10 to $20, Amazon) and Tigress costume ($25 to $35, Amazon). Just make sure they don’t drop kick their candy before they get home.

12

'The Princess Bride'

The Princess Bride is one of my favorite films with charming and funny characters, full of witty lines. If you'd like to dress your kid as Wesley, you can get a black shirt ($10, Amazon), with black pants ($10 to $14, Amazon), an eye mask ($6, Amazon), head wrap ($7, Amazon), pirate boot covers ($12, Amazon), and a sword ($19, Amazon). For Buttercup, you can easily pick up a Princess Buttercup costume ($50, Halloween Costumes). Just keep an eye out for the six-fingered man.
