Acne: a word that makes many people freak. Though everyone's breakouts happen for different reasons, the one thing they all have in common is that they're annoying AF. Since I know firsthand how unpleasant breakouts can be, I try to keep a good cleaning regimen to avoid them. Unfortunately though, I still end finding myself with breakouts at the worst times. Although I know my diet and my stress level have a lot to do with me breaking out, I've also learned that there are some surprising hygiene mistakes you're making that cause acne .
To be honest, I always thought that as long as you washed your face in the morning and before bed at night, you were implementing a good routine. As I've gotten older though, I've realized that keeping your skin clear involves much more than just cleaning your face twice a day. Everything from the way you wash your body to what you wash it with are all important factors to keeping your skin clear and free from breakouts.

1. You Only Use Acne Products During A Breakout
According to Glamour, only using your acne products during a breakout can hurt your skin more than help it, especially if you have acne-prone skin. It's more effective to use a gentle product daily to prevent regular breakouts.
2. You Use The Same Towel Every Time You Wash Your Face
Teen Vogue noted that you could be sabotaging your skin by using the same towel every time you wash your face. Since towels harbor all of your bacteria, using a towel more than two or three times can place the dirt right back onto your skin.
3. You Only Splash Your Face With Water In The Morning
According to Allure, only splashing your face with water in the morning can cause a breakout shortly after. Though you may have washed your face the night before, bacteria settles on your skin at night too and needs to be washed off properly in the morning.

As noted in the aforementioned Glamour article, not using a moisturizer on your skin is another way your could be causing breakouts even if you have oily skin. After all, oily skin can still be dehydrated skin. So if you are not moisturizing, your skin will overcompensate by producing more oil.

According to LinkedIn, moisturizing your skin while it's wet can keep it acne free. Moisturizing or hydrating your skin while it's wet will ensure that it absorbs the best and keep your skin from overproducing oil to make up for dehydration. Be sure to find a moisturizer like jojoba oil so that it won't clog your pores.
6. You're Not Using A Shower Filter
Bustle noted that not using a shower filter can cause acne, since there are large amounts of minerals found in unfiltered water. This increases the he chances of having irritated skin and clogged pores, which, as a result, causes your skin to breakout.
7. You Scrub The Area Of Your Breakout
According to the previously mentioned Glamour article, if you are already having a breakout, scrubbing that area can make it worse. Using anything abrasive can cause more inflammation to the area. Try using a gentle exfoliate or foaming wash instead.
