What Parents Need To Know If Your Kid Wants To See The New Beavis & Butt-head Movie

Don’t let the animation fool you...

If you’ve been missing seeing best friends Beavis and Butt-head hanging out and getting into what can only be described as mischief, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a new movie coming out in 2022. Even better if these two are your cup of tea, a new series is expected to follow quickly after. While fans of the original series might be excited to reunite with these two slackers after such a long drought, parents might be wondering if the new movie, Beavis and Butt-head Do The Universe, is something they want to watch with their kids. Here’s what parents need to know.

Beavis and Butt-head is a cartoon meant for adults.

When creator Mike Judge first introduced his animated series Beavis and Butt-head back in 1993, it was aired later at night on MTV as part of the channel’s animated arm, Liquid Television. The story revolves around two high school couch potato pals named Beavis and Butt-head, both of whom are voiced by Judge, who go to Highland High School and mostly don’t do much of anything else. They watch porn, critique music videos, eat junk food, and are (as most of us remember) incredibly crude. The series was immensely popular during its first run from 1993 to 1997, to the point where Cher had a guest role, and was revived for two months at the end of 2011.

And now it’s back. Again.

This time, they’re doing the universe.

In what is being billed as “the dumbest space movie ever,” we find out that Beavis and Butt-head were sentenced to attend Space Camp by a creative judge in 1998 which lead them to being aboard a space shuttle, going through a Black Hole, and reemerging in 2022 where they have to come to terms with all the changes the world has undergone in their absence. The trailer sees the two returned to earth where they make a laugh at anything shaped remotely like a penis, giggle at the number 69, and return to the classic “Cornholio” jokes that were once beloved by all high school boys everywhere. They also make comments about a family’s weight, a bit of cursing, and meet smarter versions of themselves. All of this in under two minutes of a trailer.

They’re going to be dads to Gen Z kids in the TV series.

Back in 2020, Judge announced that the two would be returning to television as dads to Gen Z kids. He said at the time that it “seemed like the right time to be stupid again,” and it seems he’s not wrong. While the new series doesn’t yet have a release date, it’s expected to stream on Paramount+ as part of Comedy Central in the near future.

No, it’s not for your kids. At all.

While the film is not yet rated, it is safe to say that based on the trailer and the history of Beavis and Butt-head alone, Beavis and Butt-head Do The Universe is not appropriate for kids. Common Sense Media gave the original series a 15+ rating based on crudity, sexism, and strong language, noting that the show is particularly offensive in the way it discusses women as attainable sex objects rather than human beings. So no, not a good choice for kids.

When does the new movie come out?

Beavis and Butt-head fans can see the new movie on Paramount+ beginning on June 23. They can also watch both the original series and the short-lived reboot from 2011 on the streaming service. Just in case they need a reminder of what the series is really all about.
