9 Reasons Not To Be Embarrassed About Liking Porn

by Meg Kehoe

There's a stigma around watching porn, especially where women are concerned. Like many things in society, it's considered kosher for men to watch and love porn, but less so for women. What is that about? There are reasons upon reasons upon reasons not to be embarrassed about liking porn. Because, like everything else sexual, you reserve your right to do whatever you like, as long as it's consensual and healthy.

You may have been taught to be embarrassed about anything of a sexual nature. Pleasure, masturbation, just downright enjoying sex — and you're not alone. But you know what else you're not alone in? Wanting those things. Enjoying those things. There's an entire sex positive movement dedicated to it. Dedicated to the idea that sex is wonderful and healthy and should absolutely be pursued as a means of pleasure, and not just reproduction. Can I get a hell yeah?

This includes porn. Whether you're just dipping your toes into the land o' porn, or you'll a full fledged fan, I hope this list helps you get comfortable with the fact that you like porn. Because you deserve to like what you like, regardless of what society's taught you all these years. So next time someone tries to shame you for enjoying a little skin flick, remember these reasons not to be embarrassed about liking porn.

1

You're Not Alone

Studies show that ten percent of women are watching porn, daily. You know what that means? You're not alone. And I'd wager you're not alone in liking it, either.

2

It Can Be Sex Positive

Owning what you love? Consensual? Learning what you love? Super sexy? Yeah, I'd call that sex positive.

3

It's Feminist

Hell yes, porn can be feminist. You just have to look in the right stashes, find the right plot line, and bingo. You're all set to get off with your feminist porn.

4

It's Been Around For Centuries

The origins of porn are older than dirt, where hieroglyphs on walls sufficed instead of moving pictures. According to Alternet, the first book of erotic engravings was published in 1524. If it's been around since the beginning of time, it can't be all bad, right?

5

It Can Be Educational

Although you shouldn't hold yourself to a porn star standard, you can absolutely learn a few moves from watching porn. Whether you're going solo or playing with a partner, there's plenty to learn from the professionals.

6

There's Porn Out There For Everyone

Literally any kind of porn you can imagine, exists. Google it, I dare you.

7

It Can Be Mindblowing

I'll be honest with you, the very first time I watched porn, I was a mixture of amazed, terrified, and confused. The terrified part has lessened, but for the most part, I'm still amazed. Some of the positions you see in porn? Mindblowing. (Some of the acting can also be mindblowing. And mindblowingly bad. Choose your porn wisely.)

8

Oprah Recommends It

What's that? Queen of the Universe, Oprah, has porn recommendations? Yeah. If that's not enough to champion the right kind of porn, I don't know what is.

9

It's Important To Do What You Like

Regardless of societal norms, so-called standards, or any other pressures of the world - you're entitled to do what you like. To watch what you like. And to enjoy it, free of shame or stress. You don't need to shout your love of porn from the rooftops (feel free, though, if that's your style), but simply being comfortable with it, with yourself, will do.
