7 Sex Positions To Try If You Have A Bad Knee & Doggy Style Won't Work

Sex can be tricky if you suffer from physical ailments, like bad knees. A stand-by like doggy style just isn't going to cut it if the thought of being on your knees for an extended period of time brings you pain. Instead, why not do something new and try some of these sex positions to try if you have a bad knee.

You're not alone in this issue. The American Osteopathic Association reported that about one-third of Americans have knee pain. In addition to making walking difficult, the ailment can lead to problems in your sex life. But that doesn't mean that it has to be boring, especially since having sex can be great for your pain. The truth is that there is no need to let knee pain ruin your sex life. In fact, you can have perfectly enjoyable sex with your partner while also saving your poor knees from excess pain.

"During intercourse, it may actually be helpful to move your knee through its range of motion, and the rush of endorphins could help you manage your pain," Maiken Jacobs, certified occupational therapist for New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, told Prevention.

If you're curious about how you can continue to have sex without hurting your bad knee, here are seven positions to try in order to maximize pleasure and minimize pain.

1. Missionary

Finding the right position is essential when you have serious knee pain, which is where missionary comes into play. Dr. Jeffrey A. Geller, Chief of the Division of Hip & Knee Reconstruction at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, told Prevention that missionary is an excellent position for those with knee pain because it allows the person to stay in a position with the leg extended and have no external pressure on the knees.

2. Spooning

Another great position for anyone who experiences knee pain is spooning on the side. This position also allows you to keep your knees straight and (most importantly) avoid any positions that include prolonged crouching, squatting, or kneeling, according to Jacobs.

3. In The Tub

One of the best things you can do to eliminate knee pain during sex is to get in the bath. Jacobs told Prevention that those suffering from knee pain should take a warm Epsom salt bath before sex to alleviate some of the pai.

4. With A Pillow Under Your Butt

Jacobs also suggested you try missionary with a pillow under your butt. Not only does this alleviate stress on your poor knees, but it also allows your partner to penetrate you deeper for G-spot stimulation. Keep working the pillows until you get into a comfortable enough position, and you're sure to have a great time.

5. Standing Up

Another great position for sex with a bad knee, according to the aforementioned Prevention article, is standing sex. If you stand up with your knees straight and your elbows braced against a wall, your partner can comfortably squat and enter you from the back.

6. Bent Over The Bed

If you both have bad knees, you can lay on the edge of the bed or bend over on the bed with your partner standing straight up (no knees bent) to enter you.

7. In the Morning

Typically, your knee pain increases throughout the day and gets worse towards the evening, according to Prevention. In order to lessen your pain during intercourse, try having sex earlier in the day.
